Downbeat / Upbeat

Rhythm & Time Beginner

The downbeat is beat 1, the strongest pulse in the bar. The upbeat is the “and” between beats.

Why it matters

Count-ins and cues reference these constantly — knowing which one someone means keeps you from coming in at the wrong spot.

Used in a sentence

“Come in on the upbeat of beat 4.”
