Changes
The chord progression of a song — literally the chords “changing” underneath the melody.
Why it matters
“Know the changes” means know the chord progression well enough to play or solo over it without a chart.

“You know the changes to this one?”
Digging deeper
If someone hands you a lead sheet with just chord symbols over a melody, those chord symbols are “the changes.” Knowing them means you could comp or solo over the song with no chart in front of you.
Common questions
Is “changes” the same as a chord chart?
The chart is the written page. “Changes” usually implies you've got them memorized, not just available on paper.
Do changes include rhythm, or just which chords?
Mainly which chords play and when they change — the rhythmic feel on top is usually a separate concern.
