Action
The height of the strings above the fretboard.
Why it matters
Low action is easier to play but can buzz; high action takes more finger strength but rings out cleaner. Setup techs adjust this constantly.

“The action on this guitar feels really high.”
Digging deeper
Press a string down at any fret and feel how far it has to travel before it touches the fret wire — that gap is the action. Lower action means less finger effort; higher action means more clearance before strings buzz.
Common questions
Is lower action always better?
Not necessarily — very low action can buzz or fret out during bends, especially with aggressive playing. It's a tradeoff, not a pure win.
Can I adjust action myself?
Basic truss rod and bridge/saddle adjustments are doable with the right tools, but a full setup is usually best left to a tech, especially the first time.
